Banco BHD León

Banco BHD León is the second largest private bank in the Dominican Republic. It unveiled its Mujer Mujer gender initiative in 2015.

About BHD León

Established in 1972, Banco BHD León targets a wide range of segments, including individual consumers, micro-entrepreneurs, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), corporations, nonprofits, financial institutions, and government departments. The bank holds a 18.7 percent market share and serves more than 980,000 customers in total, including 17,000 microenterprises and 128,000 SMEs. Banco BHD León employs  4,200 people and has a network of over 133  branches and more than 545 ATMs in the Dominican Republic. In 2013 the bank was awarded a Social Responsibility Award by the American Chamber of Commerce in the category “Company’s Quality of Life.”

The Program

In late 2012 the bank developed “Tarjeta Mujer,” a credit card targeting women that provides cervical and breast cancer insurance benefits, home repair services, and vehicle breakdown coverage. With the support of the GBA network, Banco BHD León has developed a strategy to become the bank of choice for women in the Dominican Republic, and in 2015 launched its “Mujer Mujer” program. The platform offers a holistic value proposition for women customers, including product bundles focused on key themes — education, health, family well-being and business. Each bundle mixes credit, savings and insurance products. The bank also launched an annual award, “Women Who Change the World,” honoring women’s important role in changing Dominican society. These efforts are complemented by an already strong internal focus on Diversity & Inclusion — more than 60 percent of the bank’s senior managers are women, and Banco BHD León provides a number of programs and benefits for women staff members.
